Biography

MUNK is the music project of Italo-German Mathias Modica. Mathias is the head of Germany’s No.1 Disco & IndieHouse label GOMMA. The label of bands like WhoMadeWho, Phenomenal Handclap Band, Moullinex and others. His music has won the approval of fashion icons like Karl Lagerfeld and collaborations with Asia Argento.

Mathias is one of the leading figures in the new German Indie-Disco movement and released two much acclaimed albums. APERITIVO (2005 – which featured James Murphy of DFA) and CLOUDBUSTER (2008 – including the hit single Live Fast Die Old with Asia Argento) – a favourite of DJs such as Aeroplane, Erol Alkan and Mylo. London’s NME defined it a “Essential album” and wrote “Munk is the European answer to DFA!” .

Mathias is a busy guy: besides producing his own music and albums for other bands, he is touring the world as a DJ and with his 4 person live band. He also created the GOMMA label with partner Telonius Imbery. The label has since it’s inception sustained great buzz throughout Europe: “Remix of the year” on iTunes, best sold single in December 2009 on JUNO.CO.UK, and Gomma acts touring in support of Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem and The Gossip.

As the producer for Die Sterne where he was credited with helping reviving their career for new audiences. He’s also worked with Danish Who Made Who and Italo Disco Champs Rodion. MUNK cooperations with CHRISTABELLE (the singer of Lindström), MICKY MOONLIGHT (Ed Banger) and L OU HAYTER (New Young Pony Club)was released in 2010 along with the new single “La Musica” featuring remixes by Azari & III, Audiojacks, Tiago, Mercury etc.
